The Arbortech Story

In the early 1980's, Kevin Inkster, a fine woodworker and inventor, developed a disc attachment for an angle grinder to meet his need for sculpting Windsor chair seats quickly. Other woodworkers soon saw the benefits of this rotary tool attachment and in 1988, Arbortech Pty Ltd was incorporated by Kevin and Kristine Inkster to manufacture and market this product.

The first production runs took place in a small shed in Nannup, a South West Australian country town. However increased sales and the pursuit of export markets necessitated a move to the city of Perth in 1990. The Woodcarver range of shaping tools has now expanded to over sixty products and accessories which are marketed worldwide.

Further expansion allowed the Company to set up a separate Research and Development facility alongside production to enable development of current products and future innovations.

This facility has seen the invention and development of several new technologies, including a patented cutting technology, known as the Allsaw technology. It features a unique patented orbital cutting action capable of being utilised in a variety of applications. This technology attracted agreements with Atlas Copco of Sweden for the first model, the KS26, and since the AS160 is now marketed by Arbortech worldwide. A petrol(gasoline) model is being developed for use in forestry, landscaping, rescue and masonry areas.

The technology will revolutionise cutting practices in many industries and will greatly enhance safety for previously unsafe tasks. It was because of these unique and innovative safety features that Arbortech was awarded a BHP Steel Award in 1993, and was awarded the Department of Occupational Health & Safety's Jobsafe Award in 1994.

Although Arbortech's commercialised products are centred on cutting technology, the Company has developed several other technologies including the Direct Drive Electric Motor and of course the Arbortech Airboard which was showcased at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

The management of Arbortech promotes a culture that fosters innovation. The practice of involving all staff in all aspects of engineering and administration through open forum has resulted in many lateral and unique solutions to issues that may not have otherwise been possible.

Our tools are designed and made in Australia, by people who love tools. Their level of commitment and enthusiasm is embodied in every one of our products.
